Calem is 1 year old!! Happy Birthday Sweetheart!
Unfortunately Calem was not much interested in celebrating his big date due to being sick with the croup. He has not been sick before (besides once having a little runny nose) and his nights are spend coughing and trying to breathe.
The original plan had been to wean Calem to exclusively cow milk but given nursing is one of his few comforts, he continues to nurse (primarily for comfort) but does drink some cow milk too (he even drank a little from a cup the other day!). He is not much of a fan of milk either way, favoring solid food. His favorites are finger foods, such as avacado, apples, bananas, baby goldfish, and (dare I admit) pieces of fruit loops (hey, it's got Vitamin C!). He still has some of his food pured in the Food Mill (by KidCo), mainly because the thought of him eating whole chickpeas still makes me nervous. He is a great eater, but you wouldn't guess if you saw him, the pediatrician said he is only in the 25th percentile for his weight. Maybe all that energy is directed towards making him grow--he is in the 75th percentile for his length at 31 inches long.
I've given up on having him sleep through the night given his recent illness, but once he's feeling better I'm hoping to get him back on track (previously he was waking once at around midnight and again around 6:30 AM, both times he's given a water bottle to briefly nurse then it's removed and he falls asleep on his own). While he is nowhere near being ready to be potty trained, he does enjoy playing with the potty--especially the button that makes it "sing." He loves to take things apart and try to put them back together again. One of his favorite activities is stacking wooden blocks, he consistently stacks 4 of them but has been witnessed (by both Jason and myself) to stack 7 (he would have down 8 but it was too tall for him to reach!).
The pediatrician agrees that he is a little behind in his lower body muscle tone, he predicts he won't be walking til he is 16 months. In the meanwhile, Calem has graduated from the "army comando" crawl to the "sit and scoot" crawl. So while he is behind, he is making progress so the pediatrician is not worried. One person who is definitely not worried is Calem. He remains the laid back little guy he's been from the beginning.
